The countryside area surrounding Yangshou is a climbers' paradise. You can't possibly consider not going rock climbing for a challenge. There's nothing that can beat the feeling of accomplishment as you reach the top of your climb. And definitely, the panoramic views of the incredible Yangshuo area make it well worth the effort.
Yangshuo was better known as a tourist spot, not a climbing destination till the early 1990s. Todd Skinner, a famous American climber, first developed the area for rock climbing. After that, climbers all over the world followed his steps to Yangshuo and created new routes. Thanks to their efforts, the number of established routes has risen from 20-plus in 1999 to around 1,000, with grades ranging from 5.4 to 5.15. Whether you are a seasoned master or a complete beginner, there are plenty of options for rock climbing.
People say that, Yangshuo is destined to be the number 1 rock climbing destination of Asia. There are abundant natural crags and Karst towers everywhere, which make for ideal conditions. The limestone cliffs have the angles that all climbers desire; and the rock surfaces are clean, but also uneven, with cracks that provide plenty of handholds. Among the most popular crags are Moon Hill, Swiss Cheese, Wine Bottle, and White Mountain.
Autumn is the best time to climb, with warmth (but not too hot) and lower rainfall from late September through November. And, Yangshuo has its annual Rock Climbing Festival in late October or early November.
